Contact Info:Phone: 205-322-6014 In 2004, husband and wife, Shannon and Shana Gober transformed the former John's restaurant—namesake of John Proferis who opened the restaurant in the 1940s—with John's City Diner, a landmark of their own. John's ambience is an authentic mix of its original atmosphere and a modern day diner. Black leather and grey booths with chrome accents anchor the center and line the exterior wall of the dining room. Chrome diner style tables paired with modern metal chairs are dotted around the room. Roy Lichtenstein prints in bold, primary colors brighten the walls. All tables are set with black napkins, rather than diners having to request them. And the restaurant also has two banquet rooms for private parties and special events. The menu is a mix of Southern comfort and Asian influence. It has something for everyone with a range of dishes from hand cut steaks to crispy duck. The original slaw is still on the menu as well as the bread recipe and much fresh seafood. “Not Your Mama's Mac n Cheese is the crowd favorite. A close second would be whatever fish feature we have for the day,” owner Shannon Gober says. |
